William Olkowski (7 out of 10 ) The book is better than the film. John Wayne is such a big gas bag. The real hero is the women, and I sure would like to me someone like her. That's what it took to live long and hard. She is my hero to today. Who among us would cut off their arm to save their own life. That's guts galore. John Wayne should be ashamed to play any role to top hers.
Charlie Neal (10 out of 10 ) I love how skillfully foreshadowing is used in this movie, it makes each of the reveals much more satisfying. The moral ambiguity of Rooster and to a lesser extent, Mattie, make the film feel more focused on the camaraderie of the two lawmen and Mattie than in a grandiose and ultimately boring struggle between good and evil. This script captures well the humor of Portis's novel and has a terrific theme of the incredible austerity and stinginess of the frontier.
